What Does It Take to Be a Successful Digital Nomad?
Being a digital nomad is extremely fun; you get to choose your own work hours and enjoy a great work-life balance.
However, as much fun as it is to be a digital nomad, speaking from experience, it’s no walk in the park. There’s a saying “You pray for rain, you gotta deal with the mud too. That’s part of it”.
Being a digital nomad means that you have to be extremely disciplined not to get distracted by the beautiful scenery, people, food, and anything else that excites you. Plus, you always need to carry a set of gadgets to help offer a smooth remote work experience.
Below, I’ve shared tips that I’ve learned over time. Essentially, it’s my experience, and here, I share it and explain how they’ve helped me become a successful digital nomad. So, let’s get started:
Have a Reliable Internet Connection
It is likely the most important thing on this list. A reliable internet connection will complement your online work tools, help you attend video meetings, and download/share heavy files in the blink of an eye.
Besides, it’s also useful in navigating your way around remote areas, and not to mention how it’ll help in movie nights on the weekend.
Luckily, there’s no shortage of connectivity options today. For instance, you can choose mobile data or a portable hotspot device, or simply connect to WiFi zones offered by your internet service provider (ISP).
Personally, I prefer the WiFi zones provided by my ISP, Spectrum. The connection is fast, reliable, and has strong availability nationwide. Plus, I can always find the nearest WiFi zone by calling the ever-reliable and 24/7 Spectrum customer service.
That said, public WiFi is another option that you can easily find in a café, restaurant, shopping mall, or park. However, I won’t recommend connecting to it, simply because most public WiFi is unsafe and open networks.
Prioritize Your Work
Being a digital nomad doesn’t mean that you’ll always be traveling to new destinations, meeting new people, or trying different foods. Eventually, you’ll need to work to earn money and sustain the work-from-anywhere lifestyle.
Now, one of the biggest problems most digital nomads face is staying determined and disciplined. Most of the newbies find it really difficult to balance their activities and work.
Well, as an experienced digital nomad myself, I’ll advise you to always prioritize your work over everything. Whether there’s a party going on in a café or you’ve been invited to have dinner with some people you’ve recently befriended, meet your deadlines first, and then enjoy yourself.
Also, doing so might sound easier, but you’ll need to have extreme self-control over yourself to ensure that your work always gets priority over every other activity.
Have Backup Gadgets
As a digital nomad, you’ll want a headset, a mic, maybe an external camera, and other useful gadgets for a smooth work experience. And, while most digital nomads carry all the essential gadgets, they might forget to bring their backups.
As a digital nomad, you cannot always be sure that wherever you go, you’ll find a gadget shop. And, there’s always a chance that you’re in the middle of nowhere, and one of your gadgets starts malfunctioning.
I’ve been in such a situation where my headset broke down in the middle of an important meeting. With no replacement, I had to wind up the meeting and, as a result, lost the client as well.
So, when you’re packing your stuff for the next trip, buy additional gadgets and stuff them too in your backpack. This way, even if any gadget malfunctions or breaks down, you’ll have a backup to rely on.
Delegate Your Tasks
Digital nomads have a lot on their plates. Experiencing unfamiliar cultures and adjusting to a new environment becomes relatively difficult when you also have deadlines to meet.
However, it becomes a lot easier when you delegate work-related tasks to artificial intelligence (AI) tools. Though there are countless advantages of the ever-evolving tech, I believe the best one is that there are dozens of AI tools that can automate most work-related tasks.
For instance, you can use ChatGPT for researching, brainstorming ideas, summarizing documents, and more. It might not seem significant now, but once you start using AI tools for different work-related purposes, you’ll experience how efficiently it handles multiple tasks. Plus, there’s also a bright chance that you might spend less time working and more time enjoying when delegating your tasks to AI.
There are so many tips, tricks, and hacks to become a successful digital nomad. However, these are the four most important ones that I believe are necessary to ace the digital nomad lifestyle.
So, if you’re just starting your digital nomad career, pay attention to these tips as they can elevate your remote work experience from the very first day. Good luck!
